Her work explores themes of childhood, nostalgia, and the changing places of her past.
Hinton is the recipient of several honors, including the Rosalie Chauncy Memorial Scholarship in Studio Art, the Nina G. Bushnell Scholarship, the Barbara Diane Hall Memorial Scholarship, and the Windgate Fellowship at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Her work has been featured in several publications including the cover of the Virginia Literary Review at the University of Virginia, as well as the cover of Columns: The Mary Washington Humanities and Social Science Journal. Hinton plans to pursue an MFA in painting and printmaking after graduation.
Artist Statement:
My work is a reflection of memory in the form of visual reconstruction of the people, places, and moments that have shaped who I am. Working primarily in large-scale linocut prints, my linoleum blocks act as a physical reincarnation of my memories where I carve deconstructed and rediscovered fragments of my past. Each piece begins with an image from my personal archive consisting of family photographs, familiar landscapes, and objects that carry personal, emotional weight. I transform these images through layers of ink, texture, and line into something both intimate and universal.
I often work in black and white, valuing the simplicity and contrast that linocut printing demands. The absence of color forces me, and the viewer, to focus on light, shape, form, and what remains when everything is stripped away from the image. My prints balance fine, intricate linework with bold, solid blocks of ink. The warped forms and semi-abstracted faces ask viewers to fill in the gaps and project their own experiences onto mine.
Through my process, I search for connection between myself and my history, and between my story and the viewer’s. In sharing these prints, I invite others to step into my world and find echoes of their own experiences within it.
